Such symptoms could be:

- Hearing loss
- Earache
- A sensation of blocked ears
- Ringing or buzzing in your ears (also known as tinnitus)
- Feeling dizzy or sick

Ear wax or (Cerumen) is the body's natural defence against foreign bodies reaching and damaging the ear drum. It is produced by glands in the ear canal, traps dust and other particles. The ear wax then dries up and normally falls out of the ear.

Some people produce more ear wax than others, and this can lead to a build up within the canal which can lead to a blockage. Blockages can also occur when an attempt is made to clean the ear either with a finger or a cotton wool bud. What happens when cotton buds are used is the ear wax gets pushed further into the ear, leading to impaction. This blockage can then cause symptoms such as pain, dizziness, and loss of hearing.

Often, the earwax can be treated using olive oil ear drops 2-3 times a day for 3-7 days a week. However sometimes this is not enough to clear the plug of earwax that has built up.
On this occasion it may be necessary to have ear microsuction performed to remove the excess wax. This can be done in the pharmacy by one of our trained pharmacists.

If you are experiencing symptoms of ear wax, such as a blocked sensation, some mild pain, tinnitus or feeling dizzy then the pharmacist can look into your ears.
If microsuction is necessary, then we can book you in an appointment and provide olive oil drops to be used prior to the procedure. It’s important that the wax has been softened to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible. On some occasions where the wax is severely impacted it may require a follow-up appointment to remove the plug.

The initial consultation is £15, however if wax is found in the ears and and ear wax removal is required this will be taken off the final price.
Currently we are only offering the microsuction on a Wednesday and a Thursday, but we are looking to have the clinic running on additional days in the future depending on demand.
